You’re standing in front of your closet, holding a dress in one hand and a half-eaten granola bar in the other, wondering:
“Is my bump big enough yet? Or will I just look like I had a big lunch?”
If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.
As an Oklahoma City maternity photographer, I get this question all the time. The decision of when to take maternity pictures can feel like one more thing on an already packed to-do list. Between prenatal appointments, nursery prep, and trying to remember where you last saw your water bottle (probably under the couch), timing a maternity session can feel… a little overwhelming.
But friend, it doesn’t have to be. In fact, once you know the sweet spot, you’ll feel like a pro (and look like one in the photos, too).
And because I’ve lived through this both as a photographer and a mama, I’ve got a story that might help you avoid a photo session regret I still carry with me.

Let me tell you about the time I booked a maternity shoot with a photographer I barely knew. I was pregnant with our second baby and honestly? Tired. Hormonal. And completely swayed by a cute Instagram ad and the promise of a mini session with fast turnaround.
What I got was… rough.
Blurry arms. Unflattering angles. Weird orange lighting. And some really weird poses that just make me cringe, not even laugh.
I ended up rebooking with a trusted photographer – the images turned out beautiful. However, I wasted time and money when I should have just done it right from the start.
I don’t want that experience for you. I want you to be in the hands of a photographer with over a decade of experience – one that understands lighting, flattering angles and natural posing. You deserve classic photographs that will look gorgeous, polished and vibrant for years to come!
As your Oklahoma City Maternity Photographer, please enjoy my best tips for having the perfect maternity photo session.
A well-timed session does more than deliver a pretty picture. It helps you:
✔ Flaunt that gorgeous bump while you’re still comfortable
✔ Avoid the third-trimester exhaustion crash that shows in photos
✔ Enjoy a relaxed, joyful experience that doesn’t feel rushed or forced
So let’s walk through the timeline to help you feel confident about when to book.
Aim for 28 to 34 Weeks
This is the magic window. You’re showing enough to showcase that sweet bump, but not so far along that posing feels like a sport.
First-time mamas: You may not show as early, so 32–34 weeks is usually perfect.
Second (or third+) pregnancies: Bumps tend to pop sooner, so 28–30 weeks might be your sweet spot.
Why this range works: Your belly has that cute round shape, you’ve still got some energy, and we leave breathing room in case baby wants to make an early debut
Expecting Multiples? Book Earlier
If you’re carrying twins (or more!), I recommend scheduling your maternity session around 24–28 weeks. You’ll likely be showing earlier and feeling more mobile than later on. Waiting too long might mean missing that golden comfort window.
High-Risk Pregnancy? Let’s Build in Flexibility
Every pregnancy is unique. If yours is high-risk or requires a bit more caution, let’s work together to find a window and location that keeps you safe and comfortable. I offer flexible rescheduling in these cases because your peace of mind matters most.

1. Don’t Wait to Book
Reach out early—ideally during your first trimester. My calendar fills quickly – Lock in your date, then relax knowing it’s handled.
2. Dress for Comfort (and Confidence)
Choose outfits that feel like you—flattering, not uncomfortable. Form-fitting styles that show off the bump photograph beautifully. Skip anything that tents over your belly. If you are uncomfortable in what you choose to wear, it can limit your poses and show up in photographs.
Don’t worry! Missy Mayo Photography clients receive an incredible complimentary online styling service – the most fun way you will ever shop for your photoshoot clothes!
3. Details Matter (Yes, Even Nails)
Your hands naturally land on your belly in almost every pose. A fresh manicure (even just neat, neutral polish) goes a long way. Add a bracelet or favorite ring for a touch of personal polish.
4. I will help you determine the perfect location

A maternity session isn’t just about “that one cute picture for Instagram.”
It’s about celebrating the right now—the anticipation, the changes, the quiet strength. It’s about capturing the way your partner looks at you with awe, the little curve of your belly, the way you glowed even when you didn’t feel like it.
And it’s about giving your future child proof that they were loved before they ever arrived.
To be honest, both of my pregnancies were very difficult. There were health concerns for my baby and health concerns for me. I also wasn’t one of those unicorn women that loved being pregnant. But I treasure the maternity images I took because they remind me of how strong I was back then – and I was also excited, nervous, proud and happy. Nine months can feel like an eternity, but gosh it is just the blink of an eye. I am so happy I have the images to show off that stage!
