Why is online photo backup important? Well, story time. About fifteen-ish years ago, my family faced a devastating fire in our 1920’s home. It started in the walls between my sister’s and younger brother’s bedrooms—likely from an electrical wire/rodent combo. Thankfully, everyone made it out safely.
The firemen came in with care, trying their best to minimize the damage to the historic home. But after they left, the fire reignited. In a panic, my mom—who isn’t the adrenaline-seeking type—rushed back into the burning house to grab her most precious possessions. Not the antiques, not the valuable heirlooms. She went straight for the family photos. Boxes and boxes of prints that had been lovingly collected over the years.
With the recent fires here in Oklahoma and in California and the heartbreaking losses due to floods, I’ve been reflecting on the importance of protecting our most treasured images—especially in this digital age. It’s easy to forget that our photos can be lost in an instant due to hard drive failure, fire, or theft.
So let’s talk about how to keep those memories safe!
While you DO need to have an online photo backup strategy, the truth is that you also need to keep at least one copy online. Here is why the 3-2-1 backup strategy is your best bet to keeping your digital photos safe.
Here’s a simple rule: 3 Copies of Your Data. 2 Different Media Types: Store your files on at least two different devices (like a hard drive and the cloud). And 1 Copy Offsite: Make sure one of your backups is kept somewhere else, like in the cloud or at a separate location, to prevent total loss if something happens to your home or office.
For cloud storage, I recommend services like Amazon Photos, Dropbox, or CrashPlan(which backs up your entire computer – I have used this for 10+ years). I do NOT recommend Google Photos, which compresses your images! Amazon photos is completely free online photo backup and limited video storage as long as you are a Prime member (so keep that in mind if you ever think about dropping Prime membership!). Personally, my preferred choice for online photo backup is Crashplan – I have been a loyal user for about ten years and it has SAVED me many times!
When it comes to external hard drives, I suggest investing in solid-state drives (SSDs). They are more durable and reliable than traditional hard drives. If you’ve got room on your computer, you can use one external drive as a single backup. But if you store all your photos on external hard drives, make sure to use two mirrored copies (meaning the same data on both drives). These drives are an affordable way to secure your most important digital treasures. Just keep in mind: They’re fragile. A single drop could cause a failure, so treat them carefully. And please—store at least one copy in a fire-safe box for added protection. This is my most recently purchased SSD.
Lastly, a simple, tried-and-true way to preserve your images is by printing them. A physical copy isn’t just a great way to enjoy your memories; it’s also another backup. You can print your favorites, frame them, or create a photo album that can be passed down. Plus, printed photos can’t be lost in a system crash.
Did you know that all every image collection option includes both digital images and a print credit? Your images were made to be enjoyed off screen!
This is a mistake I see all the time—relying on social media as a backup strategy. Facebook, Instagram, and similar platforms compress your photos, reducing the resolution to the point where the image quality isn’t even good enough for printing. Social media can be a great way to share your images, but it should never be your storage solution.
Taking steps to preserve your photos will ensure that, no matter what happens, your most cherished memories stay safe. Online photo backup doesn’t have to be complicated. Let’s not let fire, theft, or technical failure stand in the way of protecting the moments that matter most.
